San Gimignano
The ancient town of San Gimignano with its medieval towers and its rich artistic and cultural heritage is World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

San Gimignano was already home for a small Etruscan village, but its history began around the tenth century, taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, San Gimignano.
In the Middle Ages San Gimignano became an important and rich town thanks to the Via Francigena and because of this wealth, San Gimignano had in this period a stunning production of masterpieces to adorn churches and convents. In 1199 San Gimignano became a free municipality fighting Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. The pest of 1348 and the consequent depopulation of the town, threw San Gimignano to degradation and subsequent abandonment of the centuries, from which the town came out only when people rediscovered the beauty of San Gimignano and its extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage.

Must see in San Gimignano:

The Collegiate Church (Cathedral of San Gimignano), consecrated in 1148, was enriched by precious frescoes, including works of the Florentine school as the stories of Santa Fina painted by Ghirlandaio, St. Sebastian (Benozzo Gozzoli), wooden statues (Jacopo della Quercia); works of the Sienese school: Old and New Testaments (Bartolo di Fredi and the "Bottega dei Memmi"), Judgement (Taddeo di Bartolo), and sculptures by Giuliano and Benedetto da Majano.

Town Hall: The Courtyard and Sala di Dante (the famous poet Dante Alighieri was in San Gimignano on 8 May 1300 as ambassador of the Tuscan League) with the Majesty of Lippo Memmi.

Civic Museum and Art Gallery with works by Filippino Lippi, Pinturicchio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Domenico di Michelino, Pier Francesco Fiorentino, Sebastiano Mainardi, Lorenzo di Niccolò di Martino, Coppo di Marcovaldo etc. ... From the Civic Museum you can visit the Podestà or Torre Grossa built in 1311 and 54 meters high.

Still to see in San Gimignano: Archaeological Museum, Pharmacy of Santa Fina, Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, St. Augustine's Church.
