San GimignanoThe ancient town of San Gimignano with its medieval towers and its rich artistic and cultural heritage is World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
San Gimignano was already home for a small Etruscan village, but its history began around the tenth century, taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, San Gimignano.
In the Middle Ages San Gimignano became an important and rich town thanks to the Via Francigena and because of this wealth, San Gimignano had in this period a stunning production of masterpieces to adorn churches and convents. In 1199 San Gimignano became a free municipality fighting Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. The pest of 1348 and the consequent depopulation of the town, threw San Gimignano to degradation and subsequent abandonment of the centuries, from which the town came out only when people rediscovered the beauty of San Gimignano and its extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage.
